As of the moment, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is still preparing its Psyche spacecraft.

Although the actual Psyche launch is still months away, the space agency wants to make sure that it is integrated with all the needed tech so that it can efficiently perform during the billion-mile mission.

“NASA’s Psyche mission is preparing for a 1.5 billion-mile (2.4 billion-kilometer) solar-powered trip to the metal-rich asteroid of the same name,” captioned the space union.

In the footage, NASA explained that each of the new solar panels could open in less than eight minutes. However, the arrays can only do this one hour after the launch.

The fast-deployment feature of the new Psyche solar panels is quite efficient since it will venture into the low-light areas of the solar system.

NASA Psyche mission is expected to be launched around August. After that, it will start its journey towards the asteroid belt of Jupiter and Mars.

How New Solar Arrays Can Help NASA Psyche Spacecraft

According to SciTech Daily‘s latest report, the new solar arrays integrated into the advanced NASA Psyche rocket will help the agency to have enough power once the spacecraft reaches the asteroid belt.

NASA Psyche Director at Maxar Technologies, Peter Lord, said that the rocket’s new solar panels are quite the same as the arrays used on Earth.

But, they are more efficient when it comes to storing light energy from the sun. Peter explained that they are specifically designed for low-light conditions.
